There are games I've played where the content is spread so thin and usually lacks any quality design in them that it's easy to identify them as content similar to that of an MMO, generally, these are the things that give me that "I'm playing a singleplayer MMO" feeling a lot of the times...

Personally, I've always thought of it as just a role playing game. If your character's background/origin/traits are important to the game, then its an rpg to me. In this sense, I can even say the Halo series is an rpg to me. Leveling is clearly a convention of the genre, but I don't think I need...
