Cryengine V released as pay-what-you-want

The new Cryengine V is now under a royalty-free, pay-what-you-want model, including full access to the source code. Great news for indie developers.

They've also created a Crytek marketplace, where devs can buy high quality prebuilt assets for their games.

They were pretty much forced to do it since Amazon is also giving away their engine as well. I wonder if people will move away from Unity etc. Cryengine games are better looking compared to Unity but I hear that its lot harder to use Cryengine than say Unity.

I wouldn't say they were forced, exactly. They entered into the licensing deal with Amazon freely. It's a shift of strategy, and it seems to be the way the big engines are going. I expect they'll all be royalty-free soon.

It does have a reputation for being hard to use. I don't know if that is deserved, or if it's just due to having far fewer helpful resources available compared to Unreal and Unity, as it's been used in far fewer games.

Some big performance gains in Cryengine V, over the previous Cryengine. Hopefully some of the big projects using the engine will upgrade.

I wonder if they will make the workflow more flexible anytime soon. When I tried to use it it was super strict about what programs you could use.
