Think your job sucks?

Yup. I do dislike though when they put how much is USD they make. While there is no doubt that these people are getting paid small amounts for what they are doing, $5 in East Timor is not the same as $5 in any part of the US. It seems a bit disingenious to me.

I saw a response somewhere that the payrate works out, in local value, to subsistence wages (buy family's food for the day). I didn't bother to verify the claim. That said, I'm doubting this is actually a "desired" career path, so you've got to consider the comparative caliber of the poor bastards doing this job (versus other villagers) as well as what other career paths are available to them, if any.

35 years old, was listed in a comment. Again, I made no effort to verify. Since that poster mentioned the miners breathing "sulfur trioxide" gas, I wouldn't automatically accept it as fact, but it's probably fairly close.

Ironically, I used to bitch about the air quality all the time at my old job. I worked at a casino, and I hated all the second-hand cigarette smoke I was subjected to.

I guess I didn't really have it *that* bad.

You think that's bad?

Johnny Depp had to make do with just 55 million dollars for the latest Pirates movie. Obviously, he deserves a lot more - what with the demands of playing a moron on screen for 4 movies in a row. Just imagine the pain of sitting in the make-up trailer!

I mean, what could be wrong with that? The movie makes a lot of money, so why not just give one person enough money to feed a small country for the time it takes to make the movie.

It's the american way ;)

The sulfur is then used for vulcanizing rubber, bleaching sugar and other industrial processes nearby.

lets not forget gunpowder!

Yeah, he should really go the way of Europeans, Asian and Indian movie stars and live in poverty.

You worked at a Casino? Which one? Just out of curiosity because my mom hits all the Casinos in Vegas and Laughlin.

Check his location. Most likely, he worked one of the riverboats in Detroit.

OTOH, maybe he's just referring to four years of "funny" cigs and Quarter-Quarter-Half Euchre in Ann Arbor. :p
