feels like they are stereotyping ancient china setting but at the same time so western?
Quick! Please, please, please, pleaseeeeeee!
House of Flying Daggers.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0385004/

Rent it. Now please.
You're it's audience. And me too, of course.
Imdb says action, adventure, drama… Don't believe their western bullshit. :)
It's romance and wuxia masterpiece.

Now please. 2015. will be too late!
I wish someone RPGized this.

Only 1 hour left till new year here, joxer, so, sorry but have to wait till next year! :p

house of flying daggers was ok but I think I preferred crouching dragon.
Of course you did, but there is a reason I mentioned "western bullshit" and a movie that's not tiger/dragon. :)
both are, imo, very typical, high-budget, fake-kung fu movies (happy to recommend some if you're into them!). similarly, jade empire was OK, if you overlook the terrible combat, paperthin setting, and fake oriental garbage.
I'm sad to learn you didn't watch the movie I suggested. Not only there is nothing typical in it, but there is also no kung-fu here.

I don't care if you wathced tiger/dragon as… I don't suggest that movie to anyone. Sorry. Western… Yea…

Yeah, you want to see a real, old-school martial arts movie (no cgi or rope tricks) then see The Raid.

Most of these Hidden dragon/daggers and Jet Lei movies are mostly about rope tricks and people jumping out on trees - no Jackie Chan!

Oh yeah, the Raid (2011) is a Bruce Lee film brought to today standards. Actually think of the tower scene in Bruce Lee's Game of Death. That is the full movie for The Raid. Unbelievable fight choreography without any Sfx tricks.

A sequel (Raid 2) came out this year far more heavy in story than the first but still full of plenty of realistic fight scenes. If you like martial arts action, these two films are imo, the best in a very very long time.

The Raid 2 (Berandal) and Snowpiercer are two most important and must see movies that came in 2014.

Of course, I didn't see everything possible. But from movies I did see… Recommending just two as watch before die material.
I wish I could suggest more titles, sadly this year seem poor with superb movies.

However, for those who were or are still in love with ancient greek drama, old tragedy theatre, there is a movie that's totally Aeschylus (Eschil). Not everyone will like it, but still. Do try it:
Dawn of the planet of the apes

And that's it. I'm stopping with off topic on this thread.

Don't forget Hero. The best Jet Li movie ever.

Snowpiercer was certainly interesting and unique. Its well worth a watch. Redbox still has it around me.

Once up on a time in China http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103285/

the legend of a drunken Master http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080179/ Legend of a drunken master 2 is great too :)

Yip Man http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1220719/

Fearless http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446059/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Enter the dragon
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070034/

Hero - much better film than hidden dragon imo. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

Streching the genre definition a bit, but 13 assasins was pretty darn great for a samurai film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1436045/

All the lone wolf & cub films

Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068815/
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades (1972)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in Peril (1972)
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973)
Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell (1974)

How can I forget about IP Man. The first two movies are superb, highly recommended. I just got the third one recently but have not gotten around to watching it. (its a delayed satisfaction kind of thing).

IP Man is played by Donny Yen, who is like a contemporary Bruce Lee. Donny is a supremely gift martial artist, that needs no special effect stunts. And in case you did not know, Ip Man (aka yip man) is the guy who first instructed Bruce Lee.

I don't like modern Martial Arts Films like Tiger and Dragon or House of Flying Daggers I find them boring and the choreography is so over the top and unrealistic that I really can't get myself to enjoy them.

I like MA Films that show more than action, that have an interesting story and I like the action handmade without special effects or rope.

A movie that deeply touched me was Black belt or Kuro-obi. A japanese Karate Film in historical setting with real Karate Masters. The fights blew me away(I do Karate since I was a Kid, they are so realistic and done by real Karate masters) and there is a lot about the philosophical background of Karate. It could be that the film would be boring for people without MA/Karate background but for me this is the most important MA film:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1084019/

The entire Film is on youtube.

Another Film that deeply touched me was Redbelt. This film is more a Drama with a MA background. A Film about a Master who struggles with life and is trying to stay true to his way. And the fight scenes are great and realistic but nothing spectacular(it's how I like them):

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1012804/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Ong-Bak has absolutly brilliant fights. Story is not really interessting but the fights are awesome. I just love Muay Thai Boran.

Wuxia is the genre's name.
Now do the research. Wuxia is NOT realism. It's not supposed to be.
Just so you know, because of it's fiction and non realistic material, it was banned. Would you also forbid it then?

Tiger/Dragon is westernized wuxia. Bad and sad. From me, not recommended.

What coreography in House of Flying Daggers are you talking about exactly? Over the top? Or is it in fact, god forbid, a masterpiece?
And what is exactly boring?
You sure you watched that movie?

I know what Wuxia is, I went to china for a year ;) But I find the genre boring but this is just a personal opinion. I find no joy in watching them and I have seen a lot. Yes you are right, I did not watch house of flying daggers sorry I remembered wrong( one of the few MA Film I did not watch). But I did see the trailer and it made me not watch it.
No I would not forbid it. It's just not my taste like many other modern films.

Add The Protector, also starring Tony Jaa. Features an incredible 4-minutes single shot fight scene in a restaurant.
