Duke Nukem Forever - Dated

If I didn't consider editions like these to be based on utter commercialism and greed - by taking advantage of headless consumers, luring them into spending their money without any rational thought because of baseless enthusiasm - I might not have a problem paying extra for junk.

I just don't feel like supporting such a thing.

That assumes I am some idiot being lured into buying something I don't want, which is pretty condescending. I have a large PC games collection and I very much enjoy having it, looking through the boxes and reading the lore or instructions, seeing how they marketed the game on the back and comparing it to modern games, etc. etc.. I know in 10 years time I will get a kick out of looking through my Balls of Steel edition again.

I choose what I want to buy based on the enjoyment I will get out of it.

Hey, we're all idiots :)

It's just a matter of realising it - and trust me, I've spent a fair dime on all kinds of Gold Editions, Collector's Editions, and so on.

I can't speak for others, naturally, and I know some people get a genuine kick out of these junk packages. But I have to say I think they're kidding themselves a bit.

But it wasn't really what I meant.

I was talking about the motivation from the people making these products.

As a kid - or at least quite a few years younger, when buying these expensive packages - I was imagining that it would directly support the developers - and my sheer enthusiasm for the games made me want everything even remotely related to the product. I just wanted to have it all and support the developers at the same time.

Today, I just see commercialsm and exploitation of the consumer mind-set. It's no longer an attraction.

Something like that can only ever be for money, and if the game is anything but an interesting nostalgic distraction - I'll be surprised.
I don't want anything else from that game. A nostalgic, fun action shooter, which will be probably panned by some critics because its dated game mechanics. But I want that. I'm fed up with modern FPS games, I want Duke Nukem style action.

Then you should be more than happy with it, I expect :)

I hope so. I decided a long time ago that I won't have too high expectations, just because the game was developed for more than a decade. I just want it to be fun.

Personally every time IGN or Kotaku or whoever else talk about its "dated mechanics" in a preview I get MORE excited for the game. Reverting to FPS mechanics of 10 years instead of what we have today is a fucking blessing if you ask me.

As far as I know none of the original developers were involved in this game?

3drealms went bust and the brand was given away to another studio... so we might expect something like ArcaniA quality from this ?

No. According to Randy Pitchford, guys from 3DRealms worked on the game a lot, so when Gearbox bought the game license, they didn't have to start from scratch.

I assume they'll be keeping a lot of the assets and work done by the previous team, or it'll make no sense at all. Judging from the trailer, it most certainly looks like an updated Duke with production values from circa 2003-2005.

They'll likely have patched up the holes and kept the game mostly intact.

The game was supposedly mostly completed by 3D Realms when they shut down. Gearbox bought the IP at that point and even hired a lot of 3D Realms employees to have them help finish what they started in their living rooms as they were planning to finish the game in their personal time. Gearbox proper is actually working on other projects, they mostly only supervised DNF.

Which is what DNF needed, someone to crack the whip and get the game released.

Well, this doesn't really make sense. If it was almost done why would 3drealms close down? I know it was some kind of legal dispute or something.... but I still have my doubts about this product.

I don't really believe it was nearly done.

DN3D is closer to modern shooter than to Doom, for me it has similar wrong choices than modern shooters penalizing the action, focus on graphics and story reducing action design ambition, dodging fun vanished, only small number of monsters at same time, focus on realistic levels before designing for the action, and few other points. Obviously DNF using full ambitious 3D will largely increase those flaws, no need to play it to know it.

Oh yes :)

I'm (trying) to play Dead Space 2 at the moment. I've done 4 game sessions and I'm only about 2.5h in - after about 45 minutes with that game I always feel like taking a break.

Then I went on to play Half-Life: Blue Shift and Half-Life: Opposing Force, which I missed out on back then. Completed both! Excellent quick and simple shooter mechanics, with some physics puzzles thrown in.

Dead Space 2 is actually a pretty good game.. but it's just not the same as a quick old-school shooter. If DNF can provide something like that, then I'm in!

Still won't pay for the collectors edition though - believe it or not, I'm on DArtagnan's side on that one :)
