Kyn - Review Roundup

by Myrthos, 23:16

Here are a bunch of reviews for Kyn. Most of them are around 6.5/10. There are however two with a higher score.

Hooked Gamers, 6.5

There's more to the game than just combat though; when you encounter a puzzle they're usually either entertaining or frustrating, almost always challenging. It's also a great way to break up to stream of combat, and give your brain a bit of an exercise. Whether or not this remains true on future playthroughs is really dependent on your memory, considering the puzzles don't exactly change. When you've done a certain puzzle, it's going to be the same puzzle next time around. Between the puzzles and combat, there's plenty of loot to go around too.

Pop Matters, 6

There is more to Kyn under its surface. Probably not enough to impress everyone, but it blends disparate mechanics and skews expectations in such a way that it’s an admirable debut for Tangrin studios. For a game built by such a small team, it’s incredibly well organized and just ambitious enough to deserve a second glance. Kyn is generic, but somehow it is generic in the most intriguing way that a fantasy game can be.

PC Games n News, 7.7

Kyn is the game that looks so innocent, so simple in the beginning, but when you enter into the real world of the Kyn, you find out how much the game is good and fun. Very good RPG with few things different and some minor problems, but if there weren’t any problems at all I would give this game a much higher rating. I like that developer decided to take a little risk and to throw out the level and class system. Basically its up to you , you have freedom in this game. It’s very strategic RPG game and it doesn’t forgive mistakes. Certainly not a standard/normal RPG and I think everyone can find something in this game, that he will like.

The Mental Attic, 4/5

Visuals are interesting. The world map looks wooden, literally so, as if made by stacking slabs of painted wood. The characters follow the same example, with almost carved angular features. This gives them a cartoonish appearance that works really well for the bulky quarterback Viking Magni warriors. The environments on the other hand are beautifully detailed. My favourites are the seaside town I mentioned earlier and the Aeshir capital. They’re breathtaking and I wanted to take my time to explore every bit of them.

Grab The Games, 6.5

Dualshockers, 6.5

NewGameNetwork, 6.3

Canadian Online, 6.6

Even with all of its issues, Kyn is a decent RPG featuring an incredible soundtrack. The developers are still working on ironing out the remaining bugs, but this is definitely still worth picking up if you’re craving a new action-RPG during the remaining days of this summer lull. - See more at: http://canadianonlinegamers.com/review/kyn-review/#sthash.kQUVwoa5.dpuf

Kyn - Review @ TechRaptor

by Hiddenx, 19:46

Luigi Savinelli (TechRaptor) has reviewed Kyn:

Kyn Review – Into the Lands of Vikings

Kyn is an action RPG developed by Tangrin games. The studio is made by only 2 people who developed the art, code, level design and pretty much everything else with some help from contractors. This viking themed isometrc RPG is surprisingly enjoyable considering so few people worked on it and despite the fact it’s not free from flaws.

The story of Kyn starts with Bram and Alrik, two young Magni warrior apprentices that just completed their final trials to become mystical champions. At their return to the village of Vinborg, they find out that the Aeshir, usually peaceful forest creatures, suddenly became aggressive and started to attack human settlements. This introduction is pretty classic, but it leads later to interesting developments and a fairly deep storyline that will delve into the nature itself of the world. Nothing unforgettable and frankly the writing could use some improvements, but the story and the lore is well crafted enough to keep the player interested.

The game unfolds following a mission based advancement. At the end of every mission, you come back to the town, which changes with the proceeding of the game, so you can talk to the questgivers, shop for new items and reorganize your warriors’ specs. There’s a crafting system in the game, although it’s not a very complex one. Just talk to the blacksmith in town after you’ve unlocked it, and he’ll tell you the recipes he has available at the moment. If you have all the required reagents to build an item, you can give them to it to craft that weapon or armor. There’s a reagent vendor nearby that sells all the materials available in the game, but they can get pretty costly to buy the rarest ones so it’s advised to use it only if you miss a few reagents. Picking up the materials during the missions is the best course of action.

Rating: 7/10

Summary : Kyn is not a flawless game but is an interesting take on the topic of isometric RPGs. Worth taking a look at it.

Kyn - Coming Next Week

by Hiddenx, 07:49

PC Gamer reminds us: Kyn comes out next week on July 28:

Kyn, an indie action-RPG inspired by Viking lore, comes out next week

I'm not the kind of guy who would presume to tell you what to play, but if you're a fan of the action-RPG business then you might want to take a peek at the upcoming Kyn, a Viking-themed game that features Diablo-style combat in a party-based environment. As you might imagine, that takes a little getting used to.

I played a bit with a pre-release version of the game and it was actually pretty decent. I didn't get anywhere near far enough into it to render any kind of meaningful judgment, but its multi-character implementation was definitely interesting. I can't claim that I ever became "good" with it, but I eventually learned that trying to keep everything under control in real-time is a losing proposition. Judicious use of the spacebar, which slows battles to a crawl, is essential: It doesn't allow for the same level of strategizing as a full-on pause option, but it does keep things manageable.

Each member of the party can be customized as a fighter, a mage, a healer, or whatever else you might have in mind. Developer Tangin Entertainment also promises a "deep crafting and loot system," with more than 100 different elemental materials that can be combined to create more powerful weapons and armor, although I didn't get far enough into it to mess around with all that.

I got a powerful Titan Quest vibe from Kyn during my brief time with it, and I mean that in a good way: Titan Quest was very good, and (so says I) deserved a far more positive reception than it got. Again, that's not an endorsement, just a (very) early impression, but one that I think warrants a second look. Kyn comes out on July 28.

Kyn - New Game Trailer @ PCGamesN

by Hiddenx, 06:20

PCGamesN reminds us that Kyn is launching later this month:

At a glance, Kyn doesn’t look like it has much to do with Vikings, but its Netherlands-based developer, Tangrin, says that it’s inspired by “Viking myth and legend”. Hammers, goat-drawn chariots, end of the world -- that sort of thing, presumably. It’s an action RPG where you control a party of six adventurers, dabble in some puzzles and, mostly, kill lots of monsters.

Kyn uses a “modern strategic combat system,” which translates to being able to slow down time and reposition your party members. You can see it happen in the video above. There’s also crafting, skill specialisations, loot -- you know the drill.

It’s a bit peculiar that the majority of the characters in the trailer are casters and archers, but I guess the whole wading into combat with nothing but an axe and a beard gets a bit boring after a while. Even Vikings need to mix it up.

Kyn is due out on July 28th.

Kyn - Preview @ GamerHeadlines

by Hiddenx, 12:28

Vlad Pintea has previewed Kyn - the Hack&Slash game will be released at July 28, 2015. Some snippets:

From my brief preview experience, things look quite promising for Kyn, although there were some elements which I wasn’t able to test, these only arriving in the final version of the game.

When Kyn fully releases, players are able to gather up to six characters in their party, although the preview only includes two. I’m not sure if the beginning of the game allows you to customize your own character(s), because the preview build starts with two, predetermined ones called Bram and Alrik. These two have been trapped in a cave for a couple of months, in hope of absorbing the power of the Magni gems. The preview main quest tasks me with getting back to our protagonists’ mentor, although I wasn’t able to do so, as the map was curiously not updated; i.e., a river is separating them from their mentor, and they can’t swim. (...)

Each character is equipped with three active skills, each one assigned to a key. Skills are separated into three categories: Mind, Body, and Control. Mind skills focus more on enhancing your characters by healing them or even resurrecting, in addition to using various spells like the usual frost or fire blast, while Body skills deal more damage to enemies and allow your characters to sustain more damage, in return. Finally, Control skills allow you to set traps, throw grenades, and make yourself invisible, in addition to being the main category for using bows. In short, investing in Mind skills turns your character into a wizard, while the Body skills are reserved for a “tank”-like character, while Control is primarily used for rogue/ranged-players.

The best part is the fact that characters aren’t restricted to one class or the another, so you can turn one of your characters into a rogue who uses spells, a “tank” being able to turn himself invisible, and so on.

It’s especially worth noting that Kyn gives players the ability of slowing time down for them to issue commands to their characters. Since the game provides a decent challenge even on the Medium difficulty, it’s important to take your time and issue commands to each of your characters, this feature giving Kyn a fair level of depth to its combat system. Kyn - Beta Preview @ Hardcore Gamer

by Couchpotato, 05:01

Geoff Thew of Hardcore Gamer published a preview for Kyn, and calls it a hard game.

Kyn is a hard game. Not a hard game to talk about, or even a hard game to describe (it’s a real-time tactical RPG), it’s just really hard. If you’re not on the ball you can be wiped out in seconds, and though it gives you the ability to slow time and consider your actions, as often as not that just means prolonging your demise. If you enjoy the more nail-biting encounters of classic RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, then it could well be your favorite game of the next year. If not, it has plenty of other ways to charm you.

Kyn - Preview @ Two Dash Stash

by Couchpotato, 04:43

Well it has been a a while since I found any news for Kyn, but a site called Two Dash Stash published a new preview that gives more information about the game.

Overall I would say that Kyn has potential. It has an interesting world with great music and compelling squad based combat mechanics. It is fairly early in development but it has a very good base that they can build upon. However, the full release has been pushed back several times, leading to skepticism within the user base. There have been updates to the game before, so the project still seems to be alive. We will check back in with Kyn as it gets closer to release.

Kyn - Preview @ Game Grin

by Couchpotato, 04:19

James Furlong of Game Grin posted a new preview for KYN based on a small demo.

The first obvious influence is Baldur’s Gate. There are so many games that try to channel the greatness that Baldur’s Gate managed so effortlessly, but it looks like Kyn is close to getting it. I was shown a party of three different characters that all have three separate skill trees, all could be upgraded in any way you see fit. These trees represent the most common RPG tropes: Range, Mage and Warrior. No one character is limited to one playstyle and mixing and matching is very much encouraged.

Kyn - The Music of Kyn

by Couchpotato, 04:41

Tangrin has a new post on the Steam Forums with a few music tracks fof Kyn.

Kyn's music is composed by Will Bedford[willbedfordmusic.co.uk]. I asked Will to put some tracks on soundcloud for your listening pleasure. Every track has dynamic layers that we use depending on the mood. We have layers for when you are exploring, in combat, entering a peaceful village, or when sad things happen.

As far as I know I can't embed the soundcloud player on steam, so instead you can listen to the music here: https://soundcloud.com/2-byte/sets/kyn-ost. Since we all love our cranky sheep, we are planning a little contest involving sheep in the near future. Thank you for the great support, we have really enjoyed our first week on steam greenlight.

Kyn - Gameplay Preview @ Noobfeed

by Couchpotato, 04:26

Noobfeed has new video/preview of Kyn that shows off some new gameplay footage.

So far, Kyn looks functional and broad enough to titillate the hardcore RPG fan. By putting some more effort into making exploration, crafting and morality even more appealing, it could reach well beyond that as well. It’s getting there, but it can definitely also still use some love. If you’d like more information, then take a look at the gameplay commentary below where we go through most of Kyn’s build.

Kyn - Preview @ Game Saga

by Couchpotato, 04:55

Here is the second preview I could find in the last few months for Tangrin's ARPG Kyn. The site this time is called Game Saga who enjoyed the early build  they played.

All in all Kyn is a really fun game if you’re into Action-Adventure/Action RPG type games. I am, so I like it. It plays a lot like a mixture of WoW/Guild Wars/Diablo. Add 1 cup of WoW, 1 cup of Guild Wars, 1 cup of Diablo and mix well and you’ll get Kyn. The music is awesome, the graphics are awesome, the gameplay is fun, it’s difficult in parts, but not brutally so, just a great experience. So far there’s no voice acting, but maybe that’ll be added at a later date? Even without it, the game is still tons of fun. Keep a close eye out for this one as we get closer to Summer when Kyn is scheduled to be released.

Kyn - Preview @ Strategy Informer

by Couchpotato, 04:10

Strategy Informer has posted a new preview for Tangrin's ARPG Kyn. If you missed the announcement of the game check the previous news-bit from a few months back.

Tangrin are being very ambitious with Kyn, not least in launching an ARPG alongside the next Diablo. They talk big but at the moment though I'm simply not convinced by the team-based ARPG idea, at least in the way Tangrin's implemented it. Level design is also extremely iffy right now, especially in regard to the much-lauded puzzles. I saw no semblance of plot so can't really comment on it, but not seeing any of it doesn't give me anything to get excited about either. The AI was at least fairly impressive so hopefully that will continue to get even more challenging as the game progresses. But again, if the baseline team mechanic isn't fun it doesn't matter how good the AI is, in fact it'll probably make it worse.
