There is another advantage: Hand painted backgrounds, such as the ones used in Baldur's Gate.
Baldur's Gate used pre-rendered 3D backgrounds. Kind of like ray tracing or pov-ray or how CGI cutscenes are done. But you only see one static frame or camera shot on top of which your characters (also 3D, then rendered in particular positions and animated from these pictures) move.

Pretty sure the credits even show some of the wireframe models for some areas, along with the hand-drawn concept sketches :p
