Gaming BS of the week

MMOs are nothing but limited time. I doubt that an MMO will last for 100 years, so it's limited time. The servers will be down one day.

Meanwhile, with hopefully good emulation, a video game can still be played 100 years afterwards.

So, in my opinion, that warning is justified :

warned gamers not to spend too much in video games.

I won't spend too much money for a game that is time limited.

I sincerely doubt anyone living in 100 years will want to play a game written today.

EA: DICE’s Destruction Can Be Like Real Life Once Powered by the Cloud

I'm super excited about [streaming], but it's actually one step on a journey. The main difference in cloud is not really that the CPU is sitting in a big building versus being in your living room; the main difference is now you can have dozens or hundreds or thousands or millions of computers that can do stuff to help power the game.
Always online "necessity" bollox.
Or in other words, EA doesn't want to pay for code optimization. We should pay with our hardware. Riiiiight.

And no, I don't have a VR helmet either which is kinda odd as I'm always the minority in something videogames related.

Candy Crush Soda Saga has made more than $2 billion in its lifetime

“King’s pop-themed match-three—the second oldest title in its sugary Candy Crush series—is especially popular in America, having accumulated $1.1 billion (55 per cent) of its revenue in the U.S. alone,” writes Sensor Tower. “For comparison, Great Britain, which came in second place for player spending, has contributed $135 million, or just under 7 per cent, of Soda Saga’s lifetime revenue.”
Player spending. Player. Mhm.

As we don't have design crimes thread, here's is the standard questgivers design in (probably) all mmos out there which is, when you think about it, plain bs:

A separate, as bs got bigger. First, reminder on the old entry:
https://www.vg247.com/2019/10/30/an...sey-reviewers-didnt-play-game-claims-creator/
Patrice Desilets, creator of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, claims that some reviewers didn’t play the game at all – and even invented non-existed features.

Speaking at Reboot Develop Red today, Desilets said that his development team are “pissed” that some reviewers invented features in their criticism of the game, making it clear they hadn’t played the game about evolution.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has a Metacritic rating of 64, which he described as the “elephant in the room” during a post-mortem of his monkey game.

“We know for a fact, I’m trying to smile when I say that, some reviewers actually didn’t play the game,” he said.
Good morning. Players have been saying this for ages already and I've posted about some Outer Worlds review yesterday that I'm not playing the game game the reviewer does.

In this particular example however it's the metacritic score that "hurts" so devs are searching for an excuse. If the score was 10/10 noone would complain which makes it bullshit.
I've finished the game and that metacritic average seems fine to me. Not sure if I wrote already but why IMO the game score can't be higher although is unique and most of the time fun product:
- overall repetitiveness
- horrible babybirth minigame
- discrimination of hearing impaired people
- outdated presentation because Nintendo Gameboy, no hairworks yet everything is furry
- luck based illogical evolution steps (one animal kills another just because RNG said so)

And today:
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...ancestors-fell-victim-to-critics-expectations
"We shipped the game and we left 72 pop-up tutorial messages on the floor," he said. "We couldn't do it. They are coming now for the console version -- they will be in, it will be easier -- but we didn't have time. You need to eventually say, at the end of the day, that you have to ship. And that's more important than anything else."

Despite the mixed reception it received, though, Désilets said that it had broken even from a commercial standpoint. When asked about sales by a member of the Reboot Develop audience, he responded: "Yeah, yeah, yeah, the money is made. Plus, I know it's more a console game than a PC game."
See… Players don't have time for bs. Namely, PC players. Players who praise postpones for sakes of polishing. But yeah, since it's "more a console game than a PC game"… It made sense to cut stuff out on PC?

I've numbered reasons above why the game just can't be a sort of bestseller. Revealing that not including the tutorial on PC was because of course, can only backfire in future games sales.

Sure, just as Facebook's Farmville is the future of gaming.

Nvidia study finds gamers have better K/D ratios at higher framerates
We all know this and I've called out as bs before when publishers incapable of providing at least 60 FPS videogame excuse it as "cinematic experience".
But this part of the article sounds suspicious as my brain can't notice any difference between 144 and 240 Hz:
Yes, playing at 240fps can be advantageous versus playing at 144fps, according to this study.

Don't know if any of hte below is true - probably not - but i do know that playing a pvp game at 4800 baud is a huge advantage over a player at 1200 baud.

I love LoL. It's a rare mmo that kept me interested for a long time and it's the only one that didn't try to scam me one way or another.

I have no idea who from Riot Games thought LoL's official physical store should be this one:
https://us.louisvuitton.com/eng-us/...lection/lvxlol-the-collection/_/N-yyd2rt/to-3
As a fan, I always pick something game related, but that up there is wrong at so many levels. Just check those prices. Yes, you're seeing it correct.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...venture-publisher-cracks-down-on-itch-io-devs
Publisher of the genre-defining Choose Your Own Adventure books, Chooseco, is issuing trademark infringement notices to developers on Itch.io.

So far, four developers have been suspended from the Itch.io storefront for using the phrase "choose your own adventure."

Itch.io founder Leaf Corcoran took to Twitter, warning developers against using the seemingly innocuous phrase to describe their game.
If the phrase was "choose your own iPhone" or "RPGmake(r) your own adventure", I'd understand what caused the potential infringement.
But that up there is plain bullshit. Common words and expressions should not be owned by whatever company.

when it comes to blood and gore – which you might expect in game focused on warfare – “we want the game to be playable by as many people at as many age ranges as possible, so we intentionally avoid that to keep our rating towards the low end of Teen.

“However, much like every other Age game, I’m sure we’ll have a ‘bloody mess’ mod (or something as equally creative in name) within a day or so of release by an enthusiastic fan for those that want that in their gameplay.”
Mods will fix lack of nudity first.
If the game after that is at least a bit fun for IQ 90+ people, then "bloody mess" is possible. But if the studio dumbed it down for sakes of ESRB/PEGI rating, no dice.

China orders ban on all foreign hardware and software for government PCs
I hate bans when it comes to gaming industry. Now I might lose my chinese friend from Steam who doesn't play games while working but has the client installed because chatty. Doesn't have Origin installed because EA scans god knows what on your PC with it without asking.
Then again, China somehow always liked Steam. Maybe the ban loosens a bit.

Our biggest gripe with Atelier Ryza, however, are the awful stuttering/frame pacing issues from which the game suffers. These stutters are due to the lack of a gamepad. According to reports, the game constantly “searches” for a gamepad, resulting in stutters every two seconds. The only way you can resolve this is by… connecting a gamepad. Yeap, you read that right; as soon as we connected an X360 controller, these stutters went away. Hilarious.
Unbelievable. And of all the optimization bs code, this atrocity is not Ubisoft's game.

Not sure if this should go here, but JS has a point on at least two products up there. Those are not videogames, those are some serious bs advertised as videogame.
If you don't want to watch the video for laughs, 10 games he says were "shittiest" releases in 2019 are:
Anthem
Samael
Crackdown 3
Left Alive
SolSeraph
WWE 2K20
Contra: Rogue Corps
Ancestors
Flowers Are Dead
Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

Not sure why, PC Gamer's list did not include Bethesda's Horse Armor. So what if it sells? It's still dumbest.

Despite this, the ASA upheld the complaint, saying the ad broke new rules introduced last June that mean companies can no longer promote gender stereotypes with their commercials.

ASA compliant

One of the problems with these watchdogs is that they assume if 8 people complain then that must be the tip of the iceberg - which was probably true pre social media. Given how well people can organise using social media I do think that they need to re-think this assumption particularly with the groups that have identity politics agendas.

You also missed the point that there were no old gits (like me) in the advert. That is age-ism right.

PC Specialist made the point that their customer base is 87.5% males aged 15 to 35 so they targeted their advertising campaign on these people. Strange that!

Anyway I thought the advert was rubbish but I am not 15 to 35 though I am male.

Sea of Thieves is officially Microsoft’s “most successful new IP” of the generation

Sea of Thieves saw 283,000 active users on PC during its launch month according to market research group SuperData, compared with 1.7 million on Xbox One. Microsoft announced that it hit five million players by July 2018. Then we get the 8.4 million figure as of June last year, up to 10 million today.
Money well spent.
