Your favorite unfavored game?

My secret pleasure was Gods: Lands of Infinity. This is a real crpg that was hampered by two things: very buggy on release and they used a porn star to portray the protagonist. However, the game is full of good combat, interesting locations, a decent crafting system, and what was then nice eye candy. I think I might be one of the few Americans who actually bought the game. I need to see if it was ever ported to one of the digital libraries as I wouldn't mind playing it again and I'm not sure if I still have the CD lying around.

A couple of games off the top of my head…

The first would be Risen 2. Although it doesn't seem to be considered too bad by a lot of people here at the Watch, it gets flamed pretty hard by the masses. It sports a meta-score of 69% from the critics and a surprising 5.4 from the users. It's at least an 8 or an 8.5 to me.

Wow, I didn't realize it got such poor reviews. I wonder why that is? I thought the game was excellent and it would get an 8.5 from me as well. It was very polished and exploited the pirate theme very well I feel.

I actually gave that one another shot just recently. It's not nearly as bad as people make it sound (possibly due to it being properly patched), but there was one rather major thing that killed it for me, and that was how sluggish the movement speed actually felt. Had everyone moved a bit faster, I think I would have enjoyed the game a lot more.

It has to be played with the speed patch. You don't want to wait for the enemies to slowly move, especially zombies!

I concur regarding Risen 2. Really liked that game even though I lost interest after about 75% of the game. It really doesn't deserve a 5.4 user rating on meta critic. Was it a bunch of half-witted sheep playing and rating it?

I have a soft spot for Sorcerian, released 1990 for MSDOS, I don't really know if it was poorly received by press and gamers but it seems all but forgotten.

I have a beat-up boxed copy lying around somewhere, but I heard there are some hoops to jump through in order to run it on a modern OS.

I'm hoping it lands on GOG eventually.

Good question. I haven't seen it. Probably so badly panned that no one bothered. Too bad.

Woah! The collector's edition is available for $200.

LOL! There is an Ebay copy with a starting bid of $5. Curious how that ends up.

Never mind, the guide isn't included in the collector's edition. I got in in another package of the game.
My version is the collector's edition. Sadly the ugly pewter model that came with it has long since been lost :( (then again, it was just a random "chainmail" model, so if I wanted to sell the game, I could just get one of those and claim that it was the one that came with the CE). I got it for <50sek (6,7sek=$1, but games are usually priced at $1=10sek).

Actually, after taking a closer look at the content of that CE, it would seem like the US CE was far better than the EU one. We got a useless mouse mat (you know, one of those with a rather hard plastic front, which made it very slippery), a map, the game itself, a random model & that's it.

Favorite Unfavored . . . Ultima 9
I even did a partial replay a few months back. Probably the main problem with the game was it came out before most people had the rig to play it. Couple that with all the bugs in a day when updates were hard to come by. And it did not help that it really was not your typical Ultima game. Still, for me I found most Ultima game tedious after about the mid game point, not so with U9.

As far as Might and Magic 9, it was neither the bugs or the nor the graphics that bothered me but the lack of the ability to Fly. IMO, flying is a critical component in getting around the world in the late game. I liked MM9 but it could never be listed as any type of fav.

As far as Non-RPGs, it has to be the PC adventure game NOIR, a shadowy thriller (1996). A 40's detective thriller that took place in Los Angeles. The game used very nice black and white images of the era and had a great appropriate sound track that put you squarely in the milieu. While the game fell a tad short of being like a Film Noir, nothing in my gaming experience has come closer.

It was surprisingly good. It could have been better with a bit more variety, but it was definitely fun while it lasted.

-this (regarding Sims Medieval)

However, im still playing years later..

It's worth noting that thru patching the longetivity of the game has been extended, the game is a bit different than it was on release

Circuit's Edge for me. I can't remember any other game that kept me pushing to finish it and even multiple times... at least as far as the either lost to time or unfavored goes. There's certainly a few nowadays that have but they're top-notch and well-reviewed.

It's a pain in the ass but satisfying to finish. A rarity today.

Alpha Protocol? Sims:Medieval? Random Ultimas? Um… Guys…
I'm still waiting to see someone adores a game most critics gave less than 50%.
All games mentioned, unless I'm mistaken, are at least mediocre if not above average per critics consensus.
Do you posses a game that was panned by critics and isn't considered good by the gaming community, but in your eyes it is an absolute gem?
