I'm afraid I don't get all the cynisism either. Sure Molyneux is always boasting about his game design *"I can design this game naked!!"* and that can be a turn-off, but what's so incredibly horrible about having a dog by your side? I personally have never played an RPG with such a feature, and so I'm kind of looking forward to it. The idea of the dog changing as you do - Well what else would you expect? It wouldn't look right to have a slobbering Saint Bernard with wagging tail following around the devil, would it?
I agree that Molyneux promises the world and then doesn't deliver, but I still enjoyed Fable quite a lot. While I would never put it on par with the Gothic series, The Witcher, etc... it was a refreshing light-hearted romp afaik, that could validly be called an RPG. Depending on how the game reviews, I will probably play the second.
btw.... As I recall, Fable got a lot of praise by members of rpgdot when it was released, many of whose members now haunt these forums.
