That's not me being the supreme judge. That's me being honest. Something fanboys are incapable of. Or maybe you think you are?
Have you noticed in the last year or so how much the original Deus Ex is being hyped to levels it never achieved when it was a new game? And have you noticed how the industry was silent about Deus Ex between about 2001 and 2009? Seriously, did you ever see anybody comparing a new game with Deus Ex during those years? Did you ever see anyone referring to Deus Ex as a "classic"? Did anyone imitate Deus Ex? Did the people who worked on Deus Ex become industry icons? The one artificially-created industry icon who worked on Deus Ex faded into obscurity shortly thereafter, and the company that developed the game went out of business.
And what happened to change all that? Nothing, except that a new Deus Ex game went into development and needed to be promoted and marketed. Gratz on being part of the problem you love to complain about, fanboys. I can understand how industry insiders allow themselves to be used by game companies, but I can't understand at all how consumers become willing participants in that type of fraud. Are people really that gullible that they'll decide they actually do think a mediocre product was the best thing ever, just because somebody who works in the industry tells them so?
And here I thought this was supposed to be an indie website dedicated to RPGs… I feel like I'm over at PC Lamer's place, with some of the crap being shoveled around here.
As someone who still has the box(well, it's flattened for space) I'd say
YEAH, it scored well and was beloved by RPG fans. But, then again, we
were a NICHE MARKET. Now every tom dick and harry who plays Mass
Effect 2 or Fallout, or god damned Borderlands is a RPG gamer and has
to be catered to.
As for the "industry was silent from 2001 to 2009", all I can say is WOW.
That is a nice bit of hyperbole there. I remember STALKER getting compared
to it... what year was that...? And I know I've seen it in lists for top PC
games many times. It, and system shock CREATED
the FPS/RPG genre that's emerging. And Deus Ex did it better than many
of the newbies. Sure "grafix r sux" but you could CHOOSE how to progress.
The upgrades were LIMITED and MATTERED in how you approach the levels.
And it was one of the first to do both cyberpunk and "real world conspiracy
theory" right.
As for it not making tons of cash, well, both Troika and Black Isle fell apart
and between those two were some of the GREATEST RPGs ever created.
BTW, I wonder, why would it SUDDENLY(according to you) be recognized when
no one gave a damn before? Why aren't other old trash games being brought
up on these lists? If you, personally, don't see people talk about a game, does
that mean it's not happening???
