Well we can hope for the latter. The DLC for open world games are usually integrated into the open world. The excellent Fallout NV DLC are separate and new areas. I'm hoping for the same from the Witcher and that just keeping your end (or pre-end) game save file around to continue later will be sufficient.
But again, I doubt I will come back to it. I tend to burn out on these open wrold games that have too much shallow content to maintain my interest. It would have to be stunningly great to be more appealing than one of the many games in my backlog.
