@mags - Nope never did Hangover Square, but from what I'm reading about it, the film sounds like something that I'd enjoy.
Skeleton Key was cool, and I didnt mind watching Kate Hudson running around in her undies.
Conan the Destroyer, however, is another story. Horrible film in my opinon
Partly why I loathe it so, is that I got the two disc set when it came out and watched the first one and it back to back. The magic of the first film made the shortcomings and trite idiocy of the second almost unbearable. Conan the Barbarian" (directed by John Milius) would make Howard happy.
Arnie, Sandahl Bergman, James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom.... the guys that played subotai and mako - awesome performances all. We are along on some quest for vengeance, one man's blood feud, yet it broadens to an epic quest which will determine the fate of all. Yet you almost dont feel for the big lug as much as you do for those who care for him, it's a suprisingly emotional film at times. It's also beautifully shot film, the landscapes, sets, costumes, etc are superb. It's a dark adventure tale with lots of good battle sequences and such, and some cool and well-realized supernatural creatures and beings. It was also very D&D-like, with the different archetypical "classes" of the main characters, it made for a diverse cast. I think it's one of the great films to come out of the 80's, purrrsonally.
That's what made "The Destroyer" such a damn letdown! Horrible casting, with even real world irony - of all people, who the hell cast Wilt Chamberlain in charge of protecting a beautiful young woman's chastity? Good Lord of the Tigers!
*gazes heavenward dramatically*
And that freak Grace Jones, one of the only things from the 80's Ive truly tried to forget. I love the 80's, but when it comes to her - all Ive got to say is Gag me with a ginsu!
Beside the terrible cast of the film, it went down the road of beating us over the head with terribly annoying constant "comedy relief sidekick" (Malak the theif) who is anything but funny in this film. He grates on you like a Jerry Lewis wannabe. The fight scenes were terrible, the choreography clumsy, as Arnie whipping around his sword all ham-fistedly with some idiotic look on his face.. it's embarassing!
None of the dread or emotion at all really of the first one, no epic scale, youre on a treasure hunt. Totally cheesy effects and laughable supernatural creatures and such. Dont look now, it's time to fight some dude in a plastic halloween mask! Dont do it mags, watch the first one instead!
