Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is a new RPG/Roguelike Game that will be released on Steam this February. Now as I usually do here is a short description, and a new video.

Back to the 1980s with Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic

Remember the golden age of roleplaying? Descending to the Stygian Abyss for the first time? Looking into the gazing eye of the very first Beholder you have encountered? Listening to the tales of bards or diving into the pools of radiance?

The time has come to revisit these wonderful memories with the upcoming release of Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic!

"Listen! The end is nigh!! Hear my words and prepare! An ancient cult has set foot in our lands! They call themselves -The Sons of Dawn- and pray to some dark elder god. They have started recruiting people for their cause all over the country. I fear that they want to try to awaken something which should be left sleeping. Something dangerous and sinister! Something that might destroy us all. Spend your last of days wisely...“

Enter the world of Pixel Heroes and prepare yourself for a thrilling RPG/Roguelike experience like you have never seen before! Explore a randomized world full of hilarious events, deadly dungeons and the weirdest NPCs you will ever meet in a game! Choose three heroes for your party and take them on a journey that will be completely different each time you start a new game. Bath in a pool of procedurally generated loot and defeat the evil forces that threaten the township of Pixton!

FEATURES

  • Thirty unique hero classes to unlock, each with individual skills and attributes.
  • More procedurally generated axes, spears, maces, swords, shields, bows, crossbows, spells and prayers than a llama has hair on its body.
  • Thirteen mystic and beautifully cruel dungeons to explore. Epic bossfights waiting!
  • Three campaigns to unlock, each with its own final dungeon and boss.
  • Permadeath! You know you want it.
  • A detailed graveyard where you can mourn your dead heroes, compare their statistics and see which of their choices led to their tragic death.
  • Completely crazy NPCs, each one of them with a significant storyline that you can follow to unlock cool stuff!
  • Tons of random events that you will encounter on your way, expecting you to make important choices. Will you yell at the cat like a crazy idiot?
  • Many achievements and unlockables, try to get them all and become the most badass Pixel Hero in the world!
Pixel Heroes: Byte & Magic is to set for release on PC, Mac and Linux on Steam 6th February 2015 and is being developed by The (wonderful) Bitfather.

I'm intrigued. Too bad they had to include this:

Why is that? @Screeg

To me this looks much like Knights of Pen and Paper, which I personally didn't like as the gameplay felt like "clicking through" it without much of a challenge.
But if they offer some challenge and also have the humor and the Love in Details as implied in the video I am definitely interested.

It is sad, I think indie games are becoming a parody of themselves. This looks like a mish-mash of every trendy indie gaming buzzword possible. "RPG!" "Pixel art!" "Old-school!" "Roguelike!" "Permadeath!" "Procedurally generated!" "Achievements!".

I have a harder and harder time to tell them apart.

Just watched about an hour of youtube stuff on the game as it's already available at Desura and it looks quite simple but fun. The humor is very much like with the Munchkin card game. However I can also imagine that it might get too monotous after a couple of hours.

So another 1653487654th game that has pixel graphics? I'm getting so sick of this graphical style.

And "clever" meta humor as well. Nothing ruins a game's credibility and quality more than this. No game with meta humor can ever aspire to become a classic.

I neither see a problem in the pixel art nor in the meta humor.

And I highly doubt that they intend to become a classic. For that the game seems much to simpel in terms of gameplay.

I have a problem with the humor. Humor in games is very subjective and I haven't seen many projects where the lead was qualified both as a games developer and comedian.

Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for us, there are many games coming out this year that look like they will be classics, although I don't rule out games because they're too simple. Check out Half-way if you're interested in a simple sci-fi strategy game. It ought to be a classic. Warning: graphics are pixely!

But if it's a great mix…
I agree however, it's very subjective. Another reason why I can't stand most asian games.
But as long as one of the game's focuses is the humor I am fine with it. Grotesque Tactics is a great example of a game which put humor in the foreground and which I liked quite a lot. Not sure if the english version is on par as the German voice actors contributed quite a bit.

Yes, but they are also coming with a much higher budget and are not teams of 3 people or so like it seems to be the case with Pixel Heroes. Halfway was one of my votes for RPG of the year, so yeah, it's a great game! Is it a classic?…well….

The only pixel art RPG I look forward to is Barkley 2 because Chef Boyardee is a true bro and he actually makes fun of this kind of meta humor.
