Loop Hero - Review @ RPG Fan

by Redglyph, 11:43

RPG Fan reviewed Loop Hero.

Loop Hero

[...]

There’s not a lot of visual variety to Loop Hero, but what is there is both sparse and intensely detailed. Character portraits show pixelated shading under the eyes and the pale faces of the survivors as they try to live and make do. Enemy sprites are vivid and animated, particularly bosses, who often radiate from the screen for their distinctive appearance. And the way the multiple card tiles knit together and create these densely populated maps is wonderful. The dreary colour palette won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it helps immerse you in the game’s atmosphere.

Throughout Loop Hero, you send your character on expeditions and gather materials for camp and to find out what’s happened to the world, which has been drowned in darkness. The people the hero encounters don’t remember anything, nor does the hero, so much so that every single expedition, the path is different. The only sure thing is that the pathway is cobbled stones, it always goes in a “loop,” and you can decide how long to stay and how many risks to take on each journey. The story isn’t the focus here, and while it’s decidedly sombre, there’s some light, surreal humour thrown in, but it just serves to emphasise the game’s core loop.

Pros

Hugely addictive gameplay, unique visual style, excellent music, encourages experimentation.

Cons

Often relies too much on random chance, story is kind of just there, a few finnicky Switch controls, card variety lacking late game.

Bottom Line

Loop Hero will put you in a spin—but it's the kind you won't be able to stop going round and around in.

Overall Score: 85

Loop Hero - Review @ Gamerant

by Hiddenx, 19:43

Gamerant reviewed the auto-RPG Loop Hero:

Loop Hero Review

Loop Hero distills build-making, inventory management, and level creation into the primary mechanics of an auto-RPG, making it an innovative gem.

At first, Loop Hero might just look like another deck-building game, sprinkled with dime-a-dozen terms that blend together when one unfocuses their eyes over the front page of Steam: "indie," "pixel," "rogue-like," "RPG." However, the game's popularity is well-earned, and it is the perfect example of why indie games are so important - sometimes they manage to innovate something truly unique and special using even the most basic components. Loop Hero blends together familiar mechanics and tropes into something that feels totally refreshing, and it's worth sinking some time into.

[...]

here are three classes of hero to choose from, Warrior, Rogue, and Necromancer, all of whom require a different type of planning. There are countless types of tiles to unlock, and four chapters to the respectably-long (for a small rogue-like) campaign. The music is satisfyingly retro-funky, and the pixel-art is done right, with careful use of color and pleasingly nostalgic designs. On top of it all, there's a layer of polish, attention to quality-of-life, and intuitive design. Little details like the combat screen pausing when the player hovers over an enemy or inventory item, just in case they want to read a foe's stats or switch out a weapon on the fly, go a long way.

Downsides include the frustrations of randomized loot, an occasional grind to getting enough materials for the next camp upgrade, and the fact that by the time the fourth and final chapter rolls around there are few more secrets and combos to discover. Still, the game is a genuine gem, and for $15 at full price, it's worth getting hooked on.

Loop Hero - Review @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 12:10

PC Gamer has reviewed the rogue-like Loop Hero:

Loop Hero review

This charming "micro RPG" is one of 2021's early gems.

Loop Hero is the rehydrated essence of a dozen misremembered, ancient games. From the moment the 16-color title screen fades in alongside dramatic chiptunes, you feel like you're playing some forgotten, VGA-era fantasy RPG, a game that still contains some of the mystery and difficulty of 1991, but gently modernized to 2021.

This isn't nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. Loop Hero presents a novel and dead-simple gameplay format that's strangely engrossing, considering much of your time playing it is hands-off

[...]

The spirit of early-'90s fantasy games, cleverly revived in an original and digestible form.
Score: 83/100
