Nowhere Prophet - More Reviews

by Myrthos, 10:26

Here are four, very positive, reviews of Nowhere Prophet:

The Sixth Axis, 9

Nowhere Prophet is an excellent single player card battler that punishes you with its difficulty. The battle system has a lot of depth to it, while you're constantly worrying about your convoy as events take their toll. Still, death simply means starting again with a freshly generated campaign and getting to see more of the game's world. Nowhere Prophet can be frustrating at times, but it's fun to play through and is highly recommended for those who like strategy or card battlers.

Tech Raptor, 9.5

As a gaming experience, Nowhere Prophet is a unique and thoughtful single-player adventure. The art style is often magnificent, like an old comic book with a lot of broad strokes and splashes of color. The soundtrack is also engaging, with notes of sitar and electronica. This is an impressive debut on PC by Sharkbomb Studios (previously a mobile developer), and I can see it thriving in the long term, with a lot of new content in future updates. Card game aficionados will definitely enjoy it, though some might find it difficult. Fans of roguelike deckbuilders will no doubt pour hundreds of hours into it.

Gamespew, 9

As a lover of strategy card games, I was extremely pleased by Nowhere Prophet and am excited to go back to it again. It has everything you’d want from a card game: combat, strategy and a huge plethora of options for your decks. It can be very difficult to begin with until you’ve mastered the game’s rules, which may initially turn some players away, but stick with it and you’ll find an excellent adventure lying in wait.

Wccftech, 8

Nowhere Prophet is a single player, deckbuilding roguelike that manages to balance each of its systems to create interesting, engaging and unique stories. While it isn't without faults, its complexity and intrigue make it something you'll keep coming back to.

Nowhere Prophet - Review

by Hiddenx, 08:43

Screen Rant has reviewed Nowhere Prophet:

Nowhere Prophet Review: Creative and Addictive Card Strategy

The independent gaming scene has excelled when it comes to allowing smaller studios to tell interesting stories in unique ways. There’s creativity to be found in limitation, particularly when using a mashup of a game genre and narrative that have not previously sat well together. Nowhere Prophet, from developer Sharkbomb Studios and publisher No More Robots, is a prime example of this.

Nowhere Prophet is a story of barren world, full of cyberpunk scrap metal and dusty, dystopian tones. It’s a tale that interweaves religious fervour and future technologies, all against a background of grim survival. In other words, it’s the kind of story that traditional game development would put firmly within action gameplay, but Nowhere Prophet is instead a card deck combat game.
[...]
All in all, then, this is a game that goes far beyond what could otherwise be a rather limited framework. Nowhere Prophet is an addictive, striking card game with an impressive world to explore and tale to tell. A little bit of creativity really goes a long way.

Score: 4/5 Excellent

These features make Nowhere Prophet stand out:

  • Card-based tactical combat system
  • New procedurally generated maps each game
  • Find loot and recruit followers to build your deck
  • Unlock new content across multiple playthroughs
  • More than 300 cards for you to discover
  • Indian infused electronica soundtrack

A roguelike deck-building game

Nowhere Prophet is a single player card game with procedurally generated maps, a high difficulty and permadeath. At it's heart are two distinct parts of gameplay: Travel and combat.

TRAVEL

During travel you navigate across a procedurally generated map. Make sure your convoy has enough resources to travel as you pick your route. On your journey you will encounter strange places and even stranger people. You will be thrust into situations that put the fate of your followers in your hands.

If you're lucky enough to gain some rewards, maybe for helping someone - or robbing them, then you can invest those to improve your decks. Recruit more followers to have more and different units to put into battle. Equip your prophet or level up and learn new skills to have access to stronger action cards in combat.

COMBAT

You will have to overcome some enemies to keep your convoy and resources together. And sometimes you may even want to pick a fight for righteousness or just for loot. Once in battle the game changes to the turn-based card game mode.

Play convoy cards to put your followers onto the field and position them so you can overcome your enemy. Or play action cards to dramatically change the battlefield. But be careful: If you're wounded you will have to find a safe place to heal. And if one of your followers takes too many wounds, they are lost forever.

A science-fiction post-apocalypse
Nowhere Prophet is set on a far off planet called Soma. Your story begins many years after the Crash, a complete technological collapse. Civilization has broken down and the lack of resources made everyone turn either bandit or madman.

In this world inspired by Indian culture you lead a convoy of outcastes. These desperate men and woman following your vision of a better future. Under your guidance they travel with you through the wastelands. Your goal is the Crypt, a mystical place that promises untainted technology and safety.

If you can survive long enough to find it.
