GAME INFORMATION

Pre-release game information hidden in a ... hum, spoiler tag now. But it's not a spoiler. I'll leave it for whoever wants to buy BG3 and doesn't know anything about it but wants to avoid big (real) spoilers. (damn, it's so confusing to explain)

I'm copying my quick-and-dirty notes taken while watching Larian's last Panel from Hell as a request from @Taluntain, who would like to start an info thread in a BG3 forum. I've added a few bits since my other post.

I'm skipping what is too much of a spoiler and hiding a few bits for those who prefer not to know too much. Comments from me are in italics.

General
  • Dates are known for PC (3 August) and PS5 (6 September), but still not for other consoles.
  • People who purchased the Early Access will get a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition.
  • It's been a 6-year development, including almost 3 years in EA.
  • Number of acts: 3. The first one, which was in EA, serves as a tutorial. The next 2 acts get more difficult.
  • Unboxing the Collector's Edition.
Character creation
  • Level cap: 12 (not sure whether it's player level or class level).
  • Character creation has been entirely revamped since EA.
  • Races:
    • 11 races, 31 subraces
    • extra cosmetic customization vary with races (horns for tieflings, scars for drows, specials beards for dwarves, face of dragonborns)
    • a lot of options in general.
  • Classes:
    • 12 classes, 46 subclasses, multiclassing
    • layout has changed, step-by-step process
    • one NPC allows to respec the class - allows to experiment, especially with multiclassing
    • some subclasses come later than character creation (D&D rules).
  • The world reacts to the race & class choices; for example, with specific dialogues.
Dialogues
  • Classes and races offer specific dialogue options. For example, the druid can talk to animals.
  • About 33% more lines in act 1 in comparison to EA.
  • About 1.9 million words (includes all combinations of C&C, specific to race and class, ...).
'Origins' characters
  • You can play as one of the main NPCs, like D:OS2.
  • Some secrets/history related to origins character are revealed sooner if you play it, in extra scenes, for ex.
  • If you plan an Origin, you may make decisions that the NPC wouldn't have made. For example, you can decide whether you want to tell your secrets to other NPCs.
  • There's a fully customizable origins character (Dark Urge) - race, class, appearance with the origins story on top of that. It's apparently becoming a favourite of the testers. There are often special choices during the game for this character that tempt you doing ... things. (I've seen a scene, and it made me want to try that character)
  • Wyll has been almost entirely remade (story, dialogues); he has many early C&C.
Companions
  • There are 5 or 6 new companions that were not in EA (some good, some evil).
  • You can have a party of 4 Origins, or 4 customs, SP or MP - all combinations are possible.
  • There are available hirelings that can be included in the party instead of the Origins.
  • Someone asked if we could swap companions anytime, and if it had a cost. They answered that, if companions left, it was because of what the player does. Some companions join later in the story. When you're at the camp, you can swap them in and out. (They didn't answer very clearly, so I'm not 100 % sure the companion lock-out we saw in EA - the same as in D:OS2 - has been removed).
Romance
  • Broad choice of romance options, sometimes with several possible outcomes.
  • Your companion may leave you (or worse) if they don't agree with your choices; on the other hand, you can sometimes persuade them to do things they wouldn't normally do.
  • Starting the romance isn't just the matter of fetching something for them; it's something you have to build before you can tempt your chance.
  • The romance options reflect also in the ending. It's not just a one-night thing but a long relationship.
Combat
  • 3 difficulty modes: balanced = normal; explorer = story mode; tactician = hard mode. I haven't seen the option menu or whether there were more fine-grained options, like the possibility to respec.
  • Tactician: increased HP hit and the "puzzle" part of the combat is more complicated (the way the combat is tactically set up in the environment, the mix of enemies, ...). AI is smarter too.
  • It's possible to change the difficulty on the fly
Story and cinematics
  • 174 hours of cinematics (dialogues and scenes) made by two specialists who created Larian's cinematic department.
  • Split in all the choices, so it's probably not possible to see it all.
Worthy successor of the franchise?
  • Someone in the audience asked them why they thought BG3 was the worthy successor of the old BG games. Here's the link to Swen's reply.

PS: Many other details were already given in Community Update #20:

Some tidbits I found in Larian's forums from someone who was at the PfH and could play (link to thread). I'm only reporting what could be a factor in deciding whether to try the game or not.

Options
  • 'I didn’t see any options for fine-tuning difficulty settings beyond the three levels.'
  • (if you have kids playing it) 'there are definitely modesty filters in the options. I seem not to have noted exactly what they were, but from recollection (so heavily caveated) I think there were three in total that sounded as though they were intended to equate to (1) no nudity, (2) no sex and (3) safe for streaming'.
Classes/mechanics
  • Companion multiclassing for companions was visible in a screenshot of Jaheira (posted by s/o else).
  • 'When I clicked to level up my (initially) Ranger halfling, there was an option at the top right to "Add Class" which I clicked then selected Rogue and got the option to pick some additional skills.'
  • 'It didn't look as though we could change the starting classes of the origin characters other than The Dark Urge (for whom we can select class, race, appearance, etc)'.
  • There were changes related to stealth (two important points that were reproached in the past):
    • 'Hide' is now an Action, not a Bonus Action
    • 'every time I attacked an enemy from stealth initiative was rolled for the attacking character and they ended up out of stealth'.
  • (-) Shove was still a bonus action.
Companions
  • 'it has been confirmed that there will be no automatic party lock at the end of act 1'.
  • The personal conversation with companions seems to have been moved out of camp, which was an annoying limitation during EA.
  • Romance: Some companions are up for poly relationships.
Dialogues/UI
  • 'Swen said that lots and lots of lines specifically to reflect reactivity to our class and race had been added in the past few months'.
  • There seems to be an option to hide the armour and look like you're dressed with your camp clothes.
  • (-) 'We still have the same chain system'
  • 'character portraits looked much more distinctive and better'.

Also, Larian should clarify the dates today, including the EA update 72 hours earlier and the release. There's apparently a doubt that August 3rd is the EA or the final release.

There’s an early acces to the release? I didn’t notice any special edition sold for that. How is that determined?

Just by buying the game while it's in EA, which I suppose will remain until the release, or maybe 3 days before (you're also granted a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition):
People who purchased the Early Access will get an update 3 days before the release, in which they'll be able to play act I of the final game.

Cool. I've had the EA version for some time, but haven't installed it at all. So I assume if I download it 3 days early, I'll get the release version directly. And there's zero chance I'll finish act 1 in 3 days. So I guess it works out.

My thoughts exactly. We don't know yet if the saved game will be compatible with the release version, but I'm sure they'll post more news about it.

Since there have been many news about it already, I'll just post that here.

WolfheartFPS was in Panel from Hell; here's his feedback. May contain a few spoilers, which are usually announced. There are a few more good things too, so if you want to keep the surprise for the release, don't watch or pick only what you want to know. :)

@Redglyph the video is private and can't be watched.

Sounds like someone posted it to early or messed up on the upload.

I assume that means we can still talk to them in camp but that it's just not limited to there.

I just hope it doesn't lead to any awkward moments like a companion suddenly initiating conversation while you're sneaking around near enemies.

Thanks. Typical Youtube nonsense: there were so many views that they age-restricted the video, and WH decided to upload a new one (I'm not sure why). :cautious:

It would be pretty bad to have a domestic dispute in the middle of a fight.

Normally, you have to initiate the conversation, but let's hope it doesn't start automatically when you're close and busy with something else.

I suppose it's in the camp too, when there's time (IIRC the number of conversations was sometimes limited). I'm not entirely sure about the whole thing.

The Community Update #20 was updated to make it more confusing:
The Collector’s Edition should make it to you around the 31st of August, the original release date. For those who ordered on PC, your Steam code will be emailed to you earlier so you can start playing sooner. (Quick note: save games will not transfer from your Early Access build to release).

On PlayStation 5, to ensure you’re ready for your Digital Deluxe Edition 72-hour Early Access period, your code will be sent to you via email before the 72-hour period starts, so you can jump in right on time to claim your rewards. Phew!

So - bear with me - the PS5 owners of the Deluxe Edition should get an EA version 72 hours prior to the PC release (which definitely makes sense since the PS5 version releases on 6 September... or did they mean 72 hours prior to the PS5 release?). And the owners of the Collector's Edition (not the Deluxe Edition this time) may have either an EA or the final game 3 days earlier - but, if it's EA, saved games won't be compatible with the final release. 😶

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the riddle of the day. ;)

Larian clarified the release schedule in the new Community Update. In short, the 72-hour early access is for PS5 and not for PC.

The few important points (in bold):
[...] want to make it very clear that saves in the Early Access version will not transfer into the final game. This is due to technical reasons.

Essentially, the game is so vastly different that it’s not possible to make those save files compatible. Early Access will, of course, remain playable up to launch.

A purchase of Early Access is essentially a pre-order, and will still grant you access to the Digital Deluxe content for Baldur's Gate 3 on PC, granting you access to: an exclusive in-game dice skin, the Divinity Bard Song Pack, Treasures of Rivellon Pack, Adventurer’s Pouch, Digital OST, Digital Artbook, and Digital Character Sheets for D&D IRL.

The PC Digital Deluxe Edition does not include a 72 hour head start, which would have essentially made the game’s release date July 31st. Shifting the release date – and thus communication around the Digital Deluxe Editions across PS5 and PC – came with a few complexities that we didn’t manage to communicate very well, so we thought it best to clarify it here, given that a 72 hour head start on PC wouldn't have been plausible.

But isn’t it wild? Our PC launch is just a few weeks away! Baldur's Gate 3 is set to release to PC on August 3rd, followed by its PlayStation 5 release just a few weeks later on September 6th – or September 3rd if you pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe Edition for PS5.

As a pro PC master race peon that makes me very happy. Still I remember the days when Larían was just proudly a PC only developer. Man I am really getting old.

Also the above is a joke so don't get offended or blow a gasket.

I really hope the in-game stuff is optional and isn't automatically placed in our inventory at the start of the game.

Weren't add-ons found early in the game, in D:OS 2? I think it was the case for the squirrel companion at least, and you could tell him to go away.

Hopefully they'll do it like that again.

I'd prefer if it was handled like DLC where you can uncheck the box in the properties tab if you don't want it installed at all. I don't want to see items inspired by characters from D:OS 2 in my game.
