Games in the 40 hour range?

Thanks again for the suggestions. I think Ill give Risen a shot since its only like $10 on Steam now

Wait another week or so until the Steam Sale starts. Then you should get the whole Risen franchise for 10$.

My recommendation would be Divinity 2 - Flames of Vengeance. This stand-alone add-on is part of every Divinity 2 bundle now, I think. Larian added a healthy dose of Gothic into their formula. 25 hours or so. Very enjoyable game without much fat around the main story. Playing the main game is unnecesssary.

Risen is basically Gothic 2 in a new setting.

Age of Decadence- awesome CRPG that has a lot of replay value as most of the different backgrounds (classes) have very different quests / paths (it's like approaching the same story from different perspectives)… As such, one play through doesn't take very long. You could probably complete it with two different classes in ~40 hours.

The only thing I did not like about Risen was the last fight in the game. I changed the settings to so easy I don't care. You play the whole game one way and then they through a boss fight like that at you.....I hate boss fights to begin with...

Not really in the rpg theme as such, but I recently finished Ensalved:Odyssey to the west-more action adventure, lovely to look at, with a good story and fairly odd ending-directed by Andy Serkis (?)-you know the guy that played Gollum. and I clocked in at 30 hours. I also enjoyed Trine. It is a fun platformer with some light rpg elements. There is also another two games in the series, but i have not played them.

Right now, I can't stop raving about Aielund Saga (NWN1 module). I think if you combined all 4 parts, it's about 40 hours. I strongly recommend it! (if you could be bothered installing NWN/module/CEP etc)

King's bounty games.IIRC they are around 40-50 hours long each. Ok it's more strategy than RPG but still consider it.

From my steam account:

King's Bounty: Warriors of the North
192 hrs on record

King's Bounty: Dark Side
182 hrs on record

King's Bounty: Crossworlds
148 hrs on record

King's Bounty: The Legend
100 hrs on record

Definitely Warriors of the North/Darkside are not 40 hour games. These were all single play through's on hard, clearing every fight. You could probably slash half off by not fighting all the enemies once you get "too powerful" but I think you would have to be skipping a fair bit to get it down to 40. I found the end-game really drags on. I think I won almost every battle 0 loss with no reloads - they just had far too many battles which I probably should of skipped.

Legend and crossworlds are probably very doable in 40 hours or less if you are reasonably experienced with the mechanics. Legend took me 100 hours but it was the first time in a very long time since I had played a Kings Bounty style game. I think I was AFK a fair bit of that time.

Ok my memory of games might be little fuzzy(my steam time is unreliable because of repleys) but I remember finishing each game(I didn't play dark side) in around 50-60 hours but as I said my memory is bit unreliable on the matter.

Thats an interesting idea. I have both NWN 1 & 2, though I didnt play many modules. I played a bit of some NWN1 persistent world stuff, but very little with NWN2

Alpha Protocol is around 40-50 hours, so is Dungeon Siege 3. You could play the Diablo 3 campaign in 40 hours.

Xulima is probably 60+ though and you may start over a couple times till you get the right party for your style of play. The good thing about Xulima is the story isn't real deep so taking a weeklong break wouldn't be a big deal. Xulima is a skillpoint management game :D

Blasphemy! ;)

Great suggestion. NWN1 (and for me to a lesser extent NWW2) has a plethora of good content available. If you are a mod junkie like me you can tweak the games to lift them up to a more modern experience too.

Halfway. Mostly "light" tactics with rpg elements. Below 20h
Hard West: Finished it after 33h (also mostly tactics, not really an RPG)
Dungeonmans: Roguelite, finished after 51h
Antharion: 51h
State of Decay: Nice post apocalyptic action game with RPG elements: 20h

All 3 Shadowrun games are 20-40h

Shadowrun Dragonfall:
It could be 30H if you take your time. Probably a bit more than 20H with a bit of rushing and with a pre knowledge of rules, system, some more. It's a special blueprint but a dam great CRPG, you should really try it if you are worry not finish your next CRPG. Don't pick Hong Kong as a replacement and because it is more recent, it is far to reach the same quality.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut:
It should be under 50H, a great CRPG.

Might & Magic X:
Without the DLC it should last bellow 50H. It got a bad fame but it's great anyway.

Blackguards 2 :
It should be around 40H. A very special CRPG, it should break your heart if your heart isn't a block of ice.

Loren The Amazon Princess :
One play should be around 30H, charming one, a quick check couldn't let guess how fun it can be. Play it with the DLC that adds a lot. And a second play works fine.

Eschalon Book series:
The 1&3 should be above 30H each, the 2 around 50H, for me the best is the 3. The whole series is a lot more than 40H but you can play them separately even if there's a continuity.

Avadon 1:
Should be in the 40H, very cool CRPG.

I would recommend Defender's Quest. It's a tower defense game with RPG mechanics, where you build your army of characters and level them up with skills and gear. The HD update just came out and the game is lots of fun!

I also missed a lot of the NWN user content. Do you know of any good guides or wikis on setting up the best mods and campaigns?

Myself I remind Adam Miller NWN1 modules. Among those I played it's those the best written including with more emotions, better plots, and better characters than in many pro games. He had also a care to focus on gameplay design and bring diversity and tricks. His modules, at least for Dreamcatcher was designed with combats not bringing XP and you could often solve situations or progression by skipping some combats.

When looking about information I quoted this (old) post including a very small selection of modules for NWN1 and NWN2. In the list there's the Adam Miller modules (but not commented):

I remind Shadowlord was quite good stuff, but Dreamcatcher was big stuff of a better quality than plenty CRPG. I don't think I ever played Demon and it seems unfinished.
