Russian Game Developers & Ukraine Crisis

If Russia was smart they should do what China does. Make a clone of Unreal change a few things and call it a new engine. Just saying it works for China with mobile games.

I watched Frogwares' presentation video for their new Kickstarter. It's not so much a speech for this remake as a recap of the war events. Some of the devs are even fighting in the war, while some others fled out of the country.

Personally it doesn't inspire me much confidence, but it's effective since the goal is almost reached after only 4 hours.

So they played on the empathy of people and it worked. Good for them, they deserve a little break.

They've been interviewed by the BBC at Gamescom.

Gamescom: The Ukrainian video game makers who kept working in a war zone

Like many colleagues in the video game industry, Iryna Bilous and Nika Avayan recently arrived at the world's largest gaming conference, Gamescom in Germany, to show off their latest title to fans. But for these two Ukrainians, the road to the trade fair has been anything but a normal journey.

After Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February, Ms Avayan, chief operating officer of the Frogwares studio, decided to leave her small village near the city of Bucha.

She and seven family members, including her 76-year-old mother, bundled themselves into a car, driving for six days through queues of traffic and across country borders to make it to Germany. While there, her brother learned that his house had been hit by Russian artillery strikes and completely destroyed.

Ms Bilous, Frogwares' release manager, fled from Kyiv to France along with her pet cockatiel Blinchik (Pancake).

But, like many of their team members, after some weeks passed, and finding the situation around the capital to have stabilised at least to some extent, both returned to their home country, determined to carry on office life - and their latest project - as normally as possible.

While the two women have been allowed to leave Ukraine for their own safety and now to visit Gamescom, their male colleagues are mostly banned from leaving the country under martial law. Four members of the team even signed up to join the Ukrainian armed forces as the invasion began, and is still helping out with them today.

More than one year after GSC Game World changed the name of their game, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Live Motion Games decided to do the same with Chornobyl Liquidators, replacing the Russian's derived spelling by the Ukrainian's. And apparently, it's not a sim anymore but an RPG (more likely an adventure game with RPG elements).

Recently, there have been lively discussions in our team about a certain issue. A matter which, for many, is probably trivial, but for us, extremely important. Namely, we were faced with the problem of what transcription we should use in our game. Until now, this issue has not been raised in relation to the Chornobyl disaster, and all translations have been made from Russian. This is probably an aftermath of the time when Ukraine, and by implication the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, were part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, where Russian was forcibly used. Today, however, in independent Ukraine, the beautiful Ukrainian language can be used without hindrance. There is therefore no need to refer to the Russian language. What is more, Ukrainians themselves are trying to make international opinion aware of the difference between the two languages, which is not at all obvious outside the circle of Slavic culture. Therefore, as a team we unanimously decided to use a transcription from Ukrainian for the translation. [...]

I'm not sure how this other name was historically spelled, but both Kiev / Kyiv are accepted now, too.

Two equivalent spellings exist in French for these names, too.

EDIT: Wait... STALKER 2 reverted to the original name (with Chernobyl). Was it just a publicity stunt?

Not arrested, he's not even in Russia. Lives in a "secret location" in Germany from what I could dig up. Convicted/sentenced in absentia.

Not sure what that has to do with Russian game developers, but I'm glad Glukhovsky isn't in Russia, and I hope they never get their hands on him.

Show me the proper thread then as there isn't one as it has nothing to do with the other thread either. I just shared the link didn't even read it just glanced at it.

There were a few games based on it, and writing books is close enough IMHO - even if their style was awful. We could also change the title of the thread, which would be the better option.

Oh I'm familiar with the games of course. I'm a big fan of the series, and I've played them all. The developer is Ukrainian though not Russian.
